Isn’t it awesome when a highly anticipated UK tour opens at your local theatre? It rarely happens but, when it does, it’s a really special feeling. So I’m very excited to say the least that the UK tour of My Fair Lady is opening at the Alhambra Theatre, Bradford!
Dates and cast are still to be confirmed, but we do know New York Lincoln Center Theater’s critically-acclaimed production of Lerner & Loewe’s My Fair Lady will embark on its UK and Ireland tour from September 2022!
Following a limited run at the London Coliseum, My Fair Lady will visit Bradford before heading to Dublin, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Southampton. My Fair Lady tells the story of Eliza Doolittle, a young Cockney flower seller, and Henry Higgins, a linguistics professor who is determined to transform her into his idea of a “proper lady”. But who is really being transformed?
The show, which first premiered in spring 2018, was was the winner of the Tony Award for Best Costume Design, 5 Outer Critics’ Circle Awards including Best Best Musical Revival, the Drama League Award for Outstanding Musical Revival, and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Musical Revival and Costume Design.
Director Barlett Sher says: “Getting a chance to revisit Shaw’s extraordinary story of class and privilege in a new age is a rare and special event and I am thrilled to be able to take this epic musical on tour for audiences up and down the country to enjoy.”
Adapted from George Bernard Shaw’s play and Gabriel Pascal’s motion picture Pygmalion, Lerner & Loewe’s musical adaptation of My Fair Lady – which premiered on Broadway in March 1956 – includes classic songs I Could Have Danced All Night, Get Me to the Church on Time, Wouldn’t It Be Loverly, The Rain in Spain and many more. The musical went on to be multiple award-winning and became the longest-running musical in Broadway history at the time before transferring to London in 1958.
Like me, you probably know the musical best from its acclaimed 1964 film starring Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison, which won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It’s a really lovely story with some smashing songs – an absolute must-see for musical theatre lovers!
The show last toured in 2005, so it’s a rare but really delightful treat to see My Fair Lady is coming to the Alhambra theatre this year! Will you be buying tickets?
