Footloose is cutting loose and heading out on tour this year, and it’s going to be a good one! Following a West End run and two critically-acclaimed tours, the UK tour is sure to be a roaring success – especially with stars such as Jake Quickenden and Darren Day leading the cast.
Based on the 1980s movie, Footloose the Musical finds city boy Ren forced to move to a rural backwater in America, only to find out that in Bomont dancing and rock music are banned. Determined to get the whole town on its feet, Ren takes matters into his own hands!
I haven’t seen the film version of Footloose (I probably should – it’s on my list!) but musical versions of films like this usually do work really well. Footloose The Musical is presented by Selladoor Productions and Runaway Entertainment. Selladoor has a smashing reputation for creating unique musical adaptations, so this show is right in their wheelhouse.
The show has been cast by Debbie O’Brien and directed by Racky Plews, with choreography from Matt Cole, musical supervision by Mark Crossland, lighting design from Chris Davey and sound design by Chris Whybrow. Designer Sara Perks’ work in York includes Around the World in 80 Days for York Theatre Royal last summer and productions at Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre in York. She has also designed the tour of The Rise and Fall of Little Voice which comes to York Theatre Royal in July. It’s great to see such a talented designer on the line-up of creatives!
Now let’s get onto the cast…
Dancing On Ice winner Jake Quickenden plays lovable cowboy Willard. Jake first hit our screens in The X Factor in 2012 and again in 2014 where he went through to the live shows, followed by appearances on Chart Show TV, ITV’s Kellys Heroes, as a regular panellist on Big Brother’s Bit On The Side and as a contestant on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. Since winning the 2018 season of Dancing on Ice Jake has most recently been seen in hit TV show Hollyoaks. I’m not a massive Quickenden fan to be honest, but you have to give him fair play for this work ethic. He’s no stranger to the stage having performed in the title role of Peter Pan at Blackpool Opera House, toured with the Dreamboys and appeared in pantomime. He most recently starred in the 50th anniversary production of Hair the Musical too, proving his performing prowess!
I am a little more fond of the fantastic Darren Day, who plays Reverend Moore following numerous West End and national tours in shows including Mame, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Grease and Summer Holiday. He’s such a talented actor and has a really commanding stage presence, so this show is very lucky to have him!
Don’t miss Footloose when it dances into York Theatre Royal from 28th March – 2nd April!
