I’ve been keenly looking out for the return of the Educating Rita tour and I truly cannot wait for Stephen Tompkinson and Jessica Johnson to take to the York Theatre Royal stage from 31st August – 4th September.
Willy Russell’s award-winning play has been given an exciting new revamp in the critically-acclaimed production. Stephen Tompkinson plays university tutor, Frank, whereas Jessica Johnson plays the title role of Rita.
It’s a heart-warming and uplifting piece as one woman tries to educate herself with the help of cantankerous and cynical Frank. I’ve never seen the show live, but the film is a corker! I’m sure the play will be absolutely spectacular thanks to its incredibly talented stars.
Tompkinson is probably best known for his roles in DCI Banks, Wild at Heart and Trollied though he also has an extensive theatrical history! Jessica Johnson has also enjoyed plenty of theatre experience, having played Rita previously in the 2017 production at the Gala Theatre, Durham. She has also had roles in Coronation Street and Cuckoo.
Olivier and Tony-award winning producer David Pugh said: “Rita is the most extraordinary character – she wanted to change and learn so much and that’s everything we are going through at the moment, to adapt to the world as it is now. What we know is that Educating Rita gives you a great night out at the theatre and that’s the best any of us can hope for.”
