It’s not exactly a great time for theatres at the moment, but 2021 looks to be one of the most exciting years yet as theatres prepare to bounce back with plenty of jazz hands.
The first ever UK and Ireland tour of Waitress is heading our way. The Barry & Fran Weissler and David Ian show has been a hit in both Broadway and the West End, achieving multiple awards and nominations all over the world since it first premiered in 2016.
This is partly thanks to its incredible music and lyrics provided by singer-songwriter sensation Sara Bareilles. Her number one hit Love Song was a major success in 2007 and she has gone from strength to strength since. That includes seven Grammy® nominations, two Tony nominations and three Emmy nominations and a Grammy® award win for Best American Roots Performance in 2020.
The show’s book is written by Jessie Nelson, with direction by Tony-award winner Diane Paulus and choreography by Lorin Latarro.
The show tells the story of Jenna, an expert pie maker in a small town who is dreaming of a way to get out of her loveless marriage. When she learns of a nearby baking contest and gets to know the town’s new doctor, she may just have a chance for a new life. The musical celebrates friendship, motherhood and the magic of a well-made pie.
While full casting is still to be announced, it’s going to be an exciting time for theatre-goers next year.
Waitress comes to the Alhambra Theatre, Bradford, from Monday 3rd May 2021 for one week only. Head to the website for more information.
