What’s New Pussycat? A brand new musical right here in Yorkshire!

What’s New Pussycat? is a brand new musical featuring the iconic songs of Sir Tom Jones.

The musical has been written by Joe DiPietro, inspired by Henry Fielding’s classic comedy novel, The History of Tom Jones, A Foundling. The production will include the songs such as; Green, Green Grass of Home, It’s Not Unusual, Leave Your Hat On, Delilah, Mama Told Me Not To Come, Sex Bomb and, What’s New Pussycat?

The new musical is going to be directed by Luke Sheppard, who has had huge success with &Juliet. The show is absolutely fantastic, and on my list to see again. So it’s no wonder it recently won six WhatsOnStage Awards and is nominated for nine Olivier Awards including Best New Musical. Let’s hope Sheppard can replicate this success with his Tom Jones musical. He’s certainly in good company. The show is choreographed by Arlene Phillips CBE, designed by Jon Bausor, with costumes by Six designer Gabrilla Slade and Music Supervisor & Orchestrations by Matthew Brind. It’s got a special creative team and, with cast yet to be announced, it’s sure to be an incredibly special production altogether.

Director Luke Sheppard said: “Sometimes you work on a show and you know it could be really special, and our first staged reading of this piece left me flying high. It’s down to the amazing synergy between a fiercely witty script that takes this classic novel and casts it in a fresh and vibrant new light in the swinging 60s, and an incredible catalogue of music that has such range it can break your heart one moment and have you on the dance floor the next. It’s a joyous show with the challenges facing two young people at the centre of it, and I can’t wait to bring it to life at the beautiful newly reopened Leeds Playhouse.”

It’s amazing to hear the premiere of the show is happening at Leeds Playhouse on 23rd September! Leeds Playhouse has gone very issue-focussed over the last few years, often making political and social points with its shows rather than putting entertainment front and centre. So it’s great to see the iconic theatre livening things up a bit with this brand new show. Don’t miss it!
