Casting for Dr Korczak’s Example has been announced

Dr Korczak’s Example is set to be a moving production. It’s set in a Warsaw ghetto in 1942, examining life in an orphanage where escapism is key to survival. As it’s timed to premiere on Holocaust Memorial Day, there’s no doubt this production is designed to be a thought-provoking and potentially a tough watch.

The show highlights the work of Polish educator and children’s author Dr Janusz Korczak. It’s being expertly directed by James Brining and the intimate show, happening in the new Bramall Rock Void, will star three incredibly talented cast members.

Robert Pickavance will play Dr Janusz Korczak. He’s a brilliant actor and I’ve seen him excel on stage many, many times. He played Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol and Alfieri in A View from the Bridge. Both parts required completely versatile and unique acting skill and Pickavance brought both characters to life in very different ways.

Gemma Barnett has previously played roles such as Hermia in A Midsummers Night’s Dream amongst other starring rolls. Danny Sykes is a theatre newcomer, which may make his performance particularly special. He’s just graduated from Arts Ed so seeing him perform in his professional debut will be brilliant.

Leeds Playhouse Artistic Director James Brining said: “Dr Janusz Korczak was an incredible individual whose beliefs and teachings helped to redefine how we think about the way we bring up our own children and the part we have to play within society to achieve that. I commissioned the play and first directed it in 2001. It’s such a powerful, moving and timely story and I’m so looking forward to returning to it in the new Bramall Rock Void and particularly to working with Hebden Bridge designer Rose Revitt, recent winner of the Linbury Prize for theatre design. What we have already discovered about our new theatre is that its raw intimacy can create a powerful environment for powerful stories and Rose’s vision for Dr Korczak’s Example does just that. I am honoured to be directing this again with such a brilliant company.”
