The premiere of the stage adaptation of Kay Mellor’s Band of Gold officially has ts cast. Laurie Brett (EastEnders,Waterloo Road, Les Miserables), Gaynor Faye (Emmerdale, Playing the Field, Calendar Girls), Kieron Richardson (Hollyoaks, Heatbeat), Shayne Ward (Coronation Street, Rock Of Ages, X Factor winner) and Sacha Parkinson (Mr Selfridge, The Mill) will star in the production.
The musical follows the success of Fat Friends The Musical, though what defines success is arguable. The show was clearly a sell-out and attracted a loyal legion of fans, but it was hardly of Andrew Lloyd Webber standards. Producer Josh Andrews has clearly seen the earning potential of a Kay Mellor play in the Yorkshire region and they’ve decided to go ahead with a stage adaptation of her hit TV series.
The crime drama was originally watched by over 15 million viewers each week, telling the story of a group of sex workers who must find a killer who murders one of their colleagues.
See, my objection with this gritty thriller hitting Leeds is purely due to it being Leeds’ festive show. Where’s the Christmas carolling and heart-warming festive stories full of toasty fireplaces and goodwill to all men? It seems a very odd choice to me.
The cast are, however, superb and it’s fantastic to see so many talented actors and actresses getting behind the premiere.
Band of Gold is at Leeds Grand Theatre from Thursday 28th November to Saturday 14th December 2019.
