A musical packed full of Green Day tunes? Sounds right up my street!
The Tony award-winning musical American Idiot is doing the rounds as part of a special 10th anniversary tour. The musical features all the very best Green Day songs, which have become timeless rock classics. The book has also been written by lead singer of Green Day Billie Joe Armstrong along with Michael Mayer.
The musical’s hit songs include Boulevard of Broken Dreams, 21 Guns, Wake Me Up When September Ends, Holiday and of course American Idiot! Also included are several songs from Green Day’s 2009 release 21st Century Breakdown, and an unreleased love song, When It’s Time.
The story centres on a mistrust of society and the government… a particularly relevant theme for our current political state! I worry the show might be a bit preachy or overly aggressive in its approach, but only time will tell. If it’s anything like We Will Rock You, this musical isn’t likely to be my cup of tea. I’m not the world’s biggest fan of jukebox musicals, however as the book is written by a member of the band this could be a different, fresh approach.
Waterloo Road‘s Tom Milner stars as Johnny, with X-Factor stars Luke Friend and Sam Lavery also leading the cast as St Jimmy and Whatsername respectively. I used to go to Debut Theatre School with Luke Friend so it’ll be nice to see him on a professional stage!
American Idiot The Musical is directed and choreographed by Racky Plews, with musical supervision by Richard Morris.
Catch the show at the Alhambra Theatre, Bradford, from 11th – 15th June.
