Leeds Playhouse has previously announced its exciting new Christmas show: The Wizard of Oz. And, while one might expect they’d be casting a well-known star as the lead role of Dorothy, it’s refreshing to see the Playhouse are hosting open auditions for the part instead.
They’re looking for “unknowns” to play Dorothy Gale and a company of young people to take on roles such as the Munchkins. This is a smart and bold move from the Playhouse, allowing people from the Leeds City Region to apply for their big break.
Though it’s easy to mark this down as a press stunt, actually it’s a really sensitive and exciting thing for the Playhouse to do – offering young people an incredible new opportunity. It’s obviously a risk for the playhouse, but it’s one likely to pay off.
The show will be directed by Artistic Director James Brining. He previously directed the fantastic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in 2015, so it’s likely this is set to be a spectacular production. The show features classic songs like If I Only Had a Brain, Follow the Yellow Brick Road and Over the Rainbow.
The Wizard of Oz will be the Playhouse’s main Christmas show in the newly transformed theatre space, though there’s also plenty of other shows going on to keep younger children entertained over the festive period.
The Wizard of Oz will play in Leeds Playhouse’s Quarry Theatre from 20th November 2019 – 25th January 2020.
