Angela Carter’s Wise Children has been adapted for the stage by Emma Rice, and it’s coming to a theatre near you!
Co-produced by York Theatre Royal, Belgrade Theatre Coventry and Oxford Playhouse, the touring show follows its critically acclaimed world premier in London at the Old Vic. It’s a particularly special collaboration as York Theatre Royal’s Executive Director Tom Bird was Executive Producer at Shakespeare’s Globe at the same time Emma Rice was the Artistic Director.
Set on 23rd April, Shakespeare’s birthday, the show tells the story of twin chorus girls celebrating their 75th birthday. Their father and actor turns 100 on the same day… as does his twin brother Peregrine. It sounds like an utterly bizarre play in which audiences are told the expect show girls, Shakespeare, sex and scandal… top that off with music, mischief, mistaken identity and thousands of butterflies and you’ve certainly got a weird and wonderful show on your hands.
Emma Rice is no stranger to adapting work for the stage, having worked at Kneehigh theatre for around 20 years. I’m not a tremendous fan of Kneehigh’s work but I do admire their creativity and style – so Wise Children is sure to be just as creative.
Catch the show at York Theatre Royal from 5th-16th March.
