Why The Wizard of Oz is a wonderful choice

Leeds Playhouse’s Quarry theatre is undergoing a major redevelopment, so it’s Christmas spectacular is likely to be its big reveal for many audience members in the city.

And what better show to get everyone into the feel-good festive spirit than The Wizard of Oz? We all know the story – young Dorothy (and her little dog, too!) are whisked away to the magical Land of Oz. Desperate to make her way back home, Dorothy must find the all-powerful Wizard with the help of her new friends… a wicked witch to face!

Based on the novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and the adorable 1939 film starring Judy Garland, this family musical features iconic songs we all know and love, including ‘If I Only Had a Brain’, ‘Follow the Yellow Brick Road’ and ‘Over the Rainbow’.

The production is being directed by Leeds Playhouse Artistic Director James Brining, who also directed the fantastic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. If it’s as good as that show I’m sure audiences far and wide will be very, very happy.

Leeds Playhouse Artistic Director James Brining said: “Christmas at Leeds Playhouse is always a magical experience and 2019 is set to be extra-special. We can’t wait to welcome everyone into our redeveloped building for this enchanting adventure story for the whole family.

The Wizard of Oz will be the centrepiece of our reopening season here at Leeds Playhouse. It is a household favourite full of adventure, excitement and magic and I can’t wait to bring the story to life in a fresh, thrilling way for 2019. It’s going to be incredible to see the new Playhouse come alive, and to share with audiences the freshly refurbished theatres, restaurants and bars. With the opening of the new public park on our doorstep, there should be a real festive buzz here on Quarry Hill.”

The theatre is also hosting a sing-a-long performance of the show so if, like me, you’re a fan of the show it’s an ideal opportunity to dress up and join in the fun! In standard awesome Leeds Playhouse style, relaxed and dementia friendly performances will also be available. The award-winning Creative Engagement department will also be promoting the show with plenty of in-school activities – a great way to get kids into the theatre!

I can’t wait to find out more about the cast – watch this space.
