Shrek The Musical is coming to Leeds Grand Theatre from Tuesday 18 December 2018 to Sunday 6 January 2019, the very last stop of its hit nationwide tour!
The musical is based on the story and characters from William Steig’s book Shrek!, swiftly followed by the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animations feature film. The production has been written by David Lindsay-Abaire, with music by Jeanine Tesori. I’m not sure whether to expect a musical version of the film, or a totally fresh adaptation. Either way, I’m sure it will be great.
This production is directed by Nigel Harman. He’s perfectly suited to direct the show, having won an Olivier Award for his performance as Lord Farquaad.
The cast will be led by Steffan Harri playing Shrek. He’s previously covered the role of Lord Farquaad so now it’s his time to shine! Marcus Ayton will play Donkey and Samuel Holmes will play the villainous Lord Farquaad. I’ve seen him previously star as the lovably camp George in The Wedding Singer so I’m really looking forward to seeing him play the bad guy!
Completing the cast, Call the Midwife star Laura Main will appear as ‘Princess Fiona’. She said: “I’ve been waiting a long time for an adventure like this to come along and now that it has I am ready to swap the surgery for the swamp in one of my favourite musicals. Shrek has made a believer out of me and I can’t wait for this fairytale to take me across the country.”
