Who’s Marie Lloyd, and why has Steve Trafford written an entire play about her?
Well, she was described as one of the greatest music hall artists of all time by poet T S Eliot. Does Don’t Dilly Dally on the Way ring a bell? Yup, that’s Marie!
It’s little wonder Elizabeth Mansfield has taken the chance to shine in Marie: The Story of Marie Lloyd at York Theatre Royal for one night only, having received an Olivier Award nomination for the same role in the West End.
The show tells the life of a truly remarkable woman, celebrating her achievements and key milestones as well as portraying elements of anguish throughout her life.
All proceeds of ticket sales from this performance will make a vital contribution to the theatre’s ongoing work with the community – an lovely and generous idea.
Go along to see Marie: The Story of Marie Lloyd on 28 November at 7.30pm. Visit the York Theatre Royal website for more information.
