I’ve seen an am-dram production of My Mother Said I Never Should and, even after being the assistant stage manager for a week-long run, I can’t tell you for the life of me what it’s all to do with.
The show examines mother-daughter relationships through the years – and through the generations – in Charlotte Keatley’s bittersweet play. They say it’s the most commonly performed work by a female playwright worldwide – thought I’m not sure if this should be used as a statement to encourage more female playwrights to start putting pen to paper. It’s certainly highly acclaimed though, winning the George Devine Award, as well as the Manchester Evening News Award for Best New Play in 1990. Keatley was also nominated for an Olivier Award as Most Promising Newcomer.
The play was first producted by London Classic Theatre (LCT) in 2000, and they’re back to give it another crack. This touring production is directed by Artistic Director of LCT Michael Cabot with Felicity Houlbrooke, Carole Dance, Kathryn Ritchie and Connie Walker in the cast.
The play details the lives of four generations of women from one family as they confront the most significant moments of their lives, and significant social changes throughout the twentieth century.
In our modern times of exciting, plot-twist TV dramas and epic soap storylines, the plot of this play is unlikely to be a shocking roller-coaster ride for the contemporary theatre-goer. The quirky weird playground scenes still give me flashbacks to this day (you’ll know what I mean when you see the show) – and I really don’t get what that’s all about. Perhaps this show will really prove the art of professional theatre. I definitely believe professionals knock spots of our am-dram friends, so I think all will become clear once I see this exciting new touring production.
